"It's good to dream," I used to tell myself back at the beginning of my career. My goal was to get listed in the highly prestigious Gault&Millau Wine Guide. Little did I dare dream that I'd achieve that feat almost immediately, less than five years after going independent. And that despite a daunting set of challenges.

As a young winemaker with no family background in wine, the mere act of going independent itself took strength and courage. Next, I bucked the status quo and made my residence and headquarters not in Franken, where the wines are grown and vinified, but rather in Emsdetten in Germany's Münsterland region. This commute naturally involves added time, expense and organizational demands. And yet: From the start, I was and continue to be driven by the goal of making a very high-quality wine and continuing to expand my still nascent winery work.

On the plus side, I've gathered a tremendous amount of experience in recent years from other winegrowing regions, countries and wineries. I've worked in South Africa, Bordeaux, Champagne and even Denmark. That knowledge shapes my approach and helps remind me again and again not to miss the forest for the trees. Which makes it all the more gratifying that my approach continues to find praise. Gourmet magazine Selection recently declared me "Germany's Best Young Winemaker for 2018/19." Once again something that I never would have dreamed, even a few years ago.
