The Krahnenberg is the local hill in the town of Andernach. It owes its name to the Old Krahnen, a historic tower crane on the shores of the Rhine, which was in operation until 1911, primarily to load millstones, tuff, and wine.
The hiking trail to the vineyard view passes from here through the Andernacher Stadtwald forest and up to the lookout point on the Krahnenberg. The Best Vineyard View in the Mittelrhein Region for 2016 offers magnificent views across the northern section of the Middle Rhine Valley as well as the Neuwied Basin with the Andernacher Pforte.
To the north-west you can make out the start of the Voreifel upland region, and the wooded slopes also start to incline more steeply in the northerly direction. On the opposite side are the vineyards of the wine-growing town of Leutesdorf, and further north is the Rhine island of Hammersteiner Werth.
As the largest wine-growing municipality in the Lower Middle Rhine region, Leutesdorf boasts a long wine-growing tradition dating back as far as the year 565. Running above its vineyards is the premium Rheinsteig hiking trail on the right bank of the Rhine.
