Cultivation and signification

The vines of the Muscat family are among the oldest grape varieties in the world and are widespread in almost all wine-growing countries. In Germany, it is mainly cultivated in the Palatinate (2023: 182 ha), Baden (121 ha) and Württemberg (142 ha).

Vinification and flavour

The wine produced in Germany under the name ‘Muskateller’ is usually vinified dry and presents itself fresh and yellow-green in the glass. The bouquet has a typically pronounced, grapey muscat flavour in all wines.The wines are ideal for blending and some are also made into sparkling wines. Dry Muscat is an excellent accompaniment to savoury poultry. As a noble sweet variety, it is often drunk as an aperitif or with desserts.

Did you know? Some grape varieties have ‘Muscat’ in their name, although they are not related to the grape variety, e.g. Grüner Muskateller (Veltliner).
